Now that the spring show season is over and we are in the thick of a hot & sticky summer in the Northeast I thought I’d post what I have been up to over the past few months.
I worked on a master copy at the Academy of Realist Art using a Zorn palette (limited colors) of a painting by Edouard Manet for about 12 weeks. They teach the indirect method so it is a painfully slow and layered process. I am not entirely finished and not sure I will continue but it was a fun and humbling exercise. Incidentally, this is one of my favorite paintings of Berthe Morisot at the Musee D’Orsay.
I took a few trips up to Appleton Farms in Ispwich, MA to see an installation called Perch which featured sculptures made with fallen trees and metal that served as perches for Bobolinks who regularly summer on the farm. I took a lot of photos and created this painting based on those photos.
I completed a few commissions of dearly departed cats. It is always an honor to be trusted with trying to capture the spirit of people’s pets. The owners said I did which makes me very happy.
I haven’t spent as much time painting outside as I had hoped. First, this summer has been either raining or brutally hot and humid. On the drier and cooler days I tried to go out but twice I ran into problems with one time being summoned home because a workman caused damage to my unit and I needed to inspect it. Another time a leg to my tripod was jammed so I couldn’t set up my easel. Here are a few I managed to to squeeze in.
I have an upcoming plein air workshop in late August in Old Lyme, CT so I will have more to show on this front.
